Gf is Star Trek ignorant, how to best introduce her to Star Trek?
Hi a week ago I went to see Star Trek in theaters with my girlfriend surprisingly by her behest, she was actually pretty interested in seeing it and came out enjoying the movie. When asked what I thought about the film I told her it was good but by no means the best star trek, not top three but definitely top five. She was surprised, not by my judgment but by my mention of the other films… she had NO idea that there were ten other Star Trek movies! A bit taken aback I asked her what characters she liked best and she told me she liked… Spark! Now not being up on the movies is one thing but no knowing of the iconic character played by Leonard Nimoy is like living under a rock. I asked her why she was interested in the movie and she said that the cast had a lot of hot guys… sigh. And asking what else she liked she mentionned the romance. Sigh…

Still regardless the fact that she’s been exposed still compels me to introduce her to the world of Star Trek. How best to proceed?

Considering that the original series was her launch off point I’ve considered that’s a logical place to start, perhaps the best of those movies ie Wrath of Khan, Voyage Home, Undiscovered Country. Or would an introduction to the actual TV episodes be more fitting since the ages of the principal cast are closer to the reboot’s. In which case what good episodes are there to start with? Charlie X, City on the Edge of Forever, the Menagerie, the one where Khan first appears. The episodes at least have a lot more to do with "romance."

I’ve also considered dabbling in the Next Generation since aesthetically the modern special effects of the new movie have more in common with the general look of 90s plus Star Trek. She surprisingly didn’t know that Professor X used to be on Star Trek sigh… First Contact seemed like a great candidate for all the talk of the new movie being action oriented it actually had no where near the amount of action as First Contact. But can I show her that without explaining the concept of the Borg with the two parter "Best of Both Worlds?" Maybe episodes that cameo original cast members might bridge more of a tie, afterall there are episodes that feature Spock, McCoy, and Scotty on NG as well as the Generations movie.

And what of Star Trek beyond those series? Deep Space 9 is quite a different beast than its predecessors and relies so much on a preexisting universe and rules defined by Next Generation. Voyager kind of is its own thing and is basically Next Generation remade so it may come off as redundant. And I’ve never seen Enterprise so I’ll let more experienced people comment on that.

Overall so many places to start but not sure how best to go at it. Can you guys tell me what would be a good Star Trek intro program of episodes/movies to show? Like what would be a good first four movies or episodes to view to introduce her to Trek?

Look, don’t take this the wrong way, but usually it’s a bad idea to try and explain something like Star Trek to a Girlfriend. I don’t personally know her so I don’t know for sure how she would react. I wouldn’t recommend lecturing her and making her sit through it. If she’s really into it, then fine, but don’t push her into it.

You may not like this answer but I suggest Enterprise. This new movie and Enterprise were made to target a different audience and I believe they did so very well. They may not have been received all that well by Star Trek die hards, but they were received by those unfamiliar with Star Trek. You may not like Enterprise, but you can’t bitch about T’Pol.
